🌿 Help Revive PocketSword — A Beloved Open-Source Bible App for iOS/iPadOS 🌿

Hello fellow Christian developers,

We're reaching out to ask for your help in reviving PocketSword, a free and open-source iOS/iPadOS Bible app built on The SWORD Project engine by CrossWire. For many years, PocketSword served as a reliable, offline Bible study tool — giving access to hundreds of Bible translations, commentaries, and other resources.

Unfortunately, PocketSword has not been updated in several years and is no longer available on the App Store.
The original developer is no longer maintaining the project, and the app does not meet Apple’s current SDK and 64-bit requirements.

What we need:

  • An iOS/iPadOS developer with experience in Swift or Objective-C
  • Familiarity with Xcode and the App Store submission process
  • Ideally, someone with a heart for open access to the Scriptures

Why it matters:

PocketSword filled a vital niche on iOS/iPadOS — offering a lightweight, offline, ad-free Bible study app with deep module support. It integrates with The SWORD Project and supports over 500 free Bible modules from multiple sources, including the extensive library at eBible.org

  • If you’re interested in contributing — even just a little — we’d love to hear from you.
  • Please contact via the aforementioned GitHub project for PocketSword.

Notes

  1. Development of PocketSword has been stalled for several years. The last release was version 1.4.8 in 2018.
  2. It was discovered on 2025-01-12 that PocketSword had been removed from the App Store!
