Extending av11n coverage?

Some of the sections on the main page list canons that are not yet mentioned in Alternate Versification. In email correspondence this week, there is definite interest in regard to the Ethiopian Orthodox canon. David Haslam 12:49, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Ethiopian canon - news from 'Studge'

Neil Rees ('Studge') of bfbs linguistic computing recently visited Ethiopia. Afterwards, he emailed me a document entitled Ethiopian Orthodox Old Testament, with the following cover note:

I have just got back from the Bible Society of Ethiopia. In looking on the Internet I have found a lot of false information about the Ethiopian canon which mention broad and narrow canons. There are only 2 canons printed in Ethiopia: the Protestant 66 book canon and the Ethiopian Orthodox 81 book canon (called the narrow canon). The so-called broad canon has never been printed and is of academic interest only.

I was looking at your page http://www.crosswire.org/wiki/OSIS_Book_Abbreviations
I submit the list of books in the Ethiopian Orthodox Bible as published by the Bible Society since 1962.

I have converted his document to PDF and uploaded it to my user space here. David Haslam 15:29, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Broken link

The link in reference 1 is broken. The SBL Handbook of Style seems to now be an item that one has to purchase. i.e. No longer a free PDF download. See [1]. David Haslam 08:26, 10 July 2011 (MDT)

See also [2] which includes a link under "(You must login to download The SBL Handbook of Style)". David Haslam 08:31, 10 July 2011 (MDT)

Introductions

Should there be a "book" abbreviation for the following introductions?

  • Introduction to the Bible
  • Introduction to the Old Testament
  • Introduction to the New Testament

For the moment, JSword is using Intro.Bible (maybe it should be Intro.Work), Intro.OT and Intro.NT for these. --Dmsmith 15:30, 17 January 2012 (MST)

Paratext Book Abbreviations

As useful and informative as [3] may be, it has nothing to do with OSIS abbreviations or SBL abbreviations. It is informative about particular books within particular traditions, but Paratext and SFM use a system of book IDs that is not similar to OSIS/SBL. The specific document that may be useful for determining or deriving addition book abbreviations is the SBL Handbook referenced at the beginning of the page. --Osk 12:07, 13 August 2012 (MDT)

Thanks for clarification. David Haslam 12:58, 14 August 2012 (MDT)
The addition of the Paratext abbreviations column is very useful. David Haslam 03:21, 16 August 2012 (MDT)

SBL Handbook of Style

The SBL Handbook of Style: For Ancient Near Eastern, Biblical, and Early Christian Studies is still available for download to SBL members.
The PDF may be downloaded once a member has signed in. See [4]. David Haslam 12:57, 14 August 2012 (MDT)

And for anyone who's interested, the book can be obtained from [5]. David Haslam 13:00, 14 August 2012 (MDT)

Parenthesized counts in column 1 divisions

Some of these counts now require updating. David Haslam 03:22, 16 August 2012 (MDT)

Yeah, I'll get to that when I'm satisfied the additions are complete. --Osk 15:39, 16 August 2012 (MDT)

Some books not included

Ethiopic Broader Canon

osisID Book Name Alternate Names Paratext Abbreviation
SinodosS Sinodos: Ser`atä Seyon
SinodosT Sinodos: Te'ezaz
SinodosG Sinodos: Gessew
SinodosA Sinodos: Abtelis
Eth1Cov Ethiopic 1 Covenant Ethiopic 1 Dominos
Eth2Cov Ethiopic 2 Covenant Ethiopic 2 Dominos
EthClem Ethiopic Clement
EthDidas Ethiopic Didascalia

Non-biblical Books from OpenScriptures

These are pseudepigrapha that do not appear in any Bibles or significant codices, but appear in OpenScriptures' data as Bible books, probably because they are mostly numbered books in series.

osisID Book Name Alternate Names Paratext Abbreviation
2En 2 Enoch (Syriac) {Why is 2En in list, but 3En not?}
3Bar 3 Baruch (Greek Apocalypse)
5Macc 5 Maccabees (Arabic) {This may be in the OpenScriptures list as a means of identifying Syriac Bibles' Josephus Jewish War book 6, included in the main page as JosephusJWvi.}
RevEzra Revelation of Ezra Greek Apocalypse of Ezra {incorrectly unified with VisEzra by OpenScriptures}
VisEzra Vision of Ezra {incorrectly unified with RevEzra by OpenScriptures}

Mentioned in canon lists, but absent from known codices

osisID Book Name Alternate Names Paratext Abbreviation
ApocPet Apocalypse of Peter {Mentioned in Muratonian Fragment (canonicity in doubt), Cod. Claromontanus, Stichometry of Nicephorus (canonicity denied)}
ActsPaul Acts of Paul {Contains: ActsPaulThecla, EpCorPaul, 3Cor, MartPaul, etc.; Mentioned in Cod. Claromontanus}

Books of questionable canonicity/biblicality

osisID Book Name Alternate Names Paratext Abbreviation
AposCon Apostolic Constitutions and Canons {Identifies itself as canonical, along with the canonical books of the Bible (minus Rev), Did, 1Clem, & 2Clem; claimed canonical in Coptic Orthodox tradition(?)}
Skeireins Skeireins {Appears in Cod. Ambrosianus E & Cod. Vaticanus Latinus 5750, but these are not codices with other biblical material. Cod. Ambrosianus A-D include biblical material, but not E. Cf. [6].; Gothic language commentary on John}
AscenIsa Ascension of Isaiah {Known from Ethiopic, but not considered canonical; Wikipedia, citing [7] claims that Charles' translation of AscenIsa is part of Dillmann's Bible, but Dillmann had died by the time Charles published his translation and I can find no evidence to suggest that AscenIsa was ever included in any Bible; Logos' Bible Study Magazine also claims this is canonical in the Ethiopic canon, but I think they're wrong about a few items in their chart and they give no evidence for their claim.}
ActsPaulThecla Acts of Paul and Thecla Acts of Thecla/Acts of Thekla{Known from various eastern churches, but not held to be canonical; denounced by Tertullian; Logos' Bible Study Magazine claims this is included in Syriac Bibles, but I think they're wrong about a few items in their chart and they give no evidence for their claim--they may be confusing Syriac with Armenian and ActsPaulThecla with EpCorPaul, given their failure to mention EpCorPaul--unless 3Cor is meant to subsume EpCorPaul.}

LBA used twice

The Paratext abbreviation LBA is used for EpBar and Barn. Is this correct?--Dmsmith 04:43, 27 August 2012 (MDT)

Good catch. And yes, it is apparently correct, where correct is defined as being an accurate reflection of the Paratext proposal at http://lc.bfbs.org.uk/e107_files/downloads/canonicalissuesinparatext.pdf. In practice, none of the Apostolic Fathers abbreviations were adopted into the Paratext codes, so LBA is officially EpBar. --Osk 20:07, 2 September 2012 (MDT)

OSIS validation and OSIS Book Abbreviations

The various .xsd files used for validating OSIS XML files are agnostic with regard to Book Abbreviations, so any that are miskeyed or misspelled will not be reported as validation fails. David Haslam (talk) 09:39, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
