Extending av11n coverage?

Some of the sections on the main page list canons that are not yet mentioned in Alternate Versification. In email correspondence this week, there is definite interest in regard to the Ethiopian Orthodox canon. David Haslam 12:49, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Ethiopian canon - news from 'Studge'

Neil Rees ('Studge') of bfbs linguistic computing recently visited Ethiopia. Afterwards, he emailed me a document entitled Ethiopian Orthodox Old Testament, with the following cover note:

I have just got back from the Bible Society of Ethiopia. In looking on the Internet I have found a lot of false information about the Ethiopian canon which mention broad and narrow canons. There are only 2 canons printed in Ethiopia: the Protestant 66 book canon and the Ethiopian Orthodox 81 book canon (called the narrow canon). The so-called broad canon has never been printed and is of academic interest only.

I was looking at your page http://www.crosswire.org/wiki/OSIS_Book_Abbreviations
I submit the list of books in the Ethiopian Orthodox Bible as published by the Bible Society since 1962.

I have converted his document to PDF and uploaded it to my user space here. David Haslam 15:29, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Broken link

The link in reference 1 is broken. The SBL Handbook of Style seems to now be an item that one has to purchase. i.e. No longer a free PDF download. See [1]. David Haslam 08:26, 10 July 2011 (MDT)

See also [2] which includes a link under "(You must login to download The SBL Handbook of Style)". David Haslam 08:31, 10 July 2011 (MDT)

Missing Abbreviations

The following were found in canon*.h in SWORD:

  • AddDan
  • AddPs
  • EsthGr

Not sure what their meta info is for the table. --Dmsmith 15:30, 17 January 2012 (MST)

Introductions

Should there be a "book" abbreviation for the following introductions?

  • Introduction to the Bible
  • Introduction to the Old Testament
  • Introduction to the New Testament

For the moment, JSword is using Intro.Bible (maybe it should be Intro.Work), Intro.OT and Intro.NT for these. --Dmsmith 15:30, 17 January 2012 (MST)

Paratext Book Abbreviations

As useful and informative as [3] may be, it has nothing to do with OSIS abbreviations or SBL abbreviations. It is informative about particular books within particular traditions, but Paratext and SFM use a system of book IDs that is not similar to OSIS/SBL. The specific document that may be useful for determining or deriving addition book abbreviations is the SBL Handbook referenced at the beginning of the page. --Osk 12:07, 13 August 2012 (MDT)

Thanks for clarification. David Haslam 12:58, 14 August 2012 (MDT)
The addition of the Paratext abbreviations column is very useful. David Haslam 03:21, 16 August 2012 (MDT)

SBL Handbook of Style

The SBL Handbook of Style: For Ancient Near Eastern, Biblical, and Early Christian Studies is still available for download to SBL members.
The PDF may be downloaded once a member has signed in. See [4]. David Haslam 12:57, 14 August 2012 (MDT)

And for anyone who's interested, the book can be obtained from [5]. David Haslam 13:00, 14 August 2012 (MDT)

Parenthesized counts in column 1 divisions

Some of these counts now require updating. David Haslam 03:22, 16 August 2012 (MDT)

Yeah, I'll get to that when I'm satisfied the additions are complete. --Osk 15:39, 16 August 2012 (MDT)
