Style of headings

Despite the good example of Wikipedia, the CrossWire wiki uses capital letters in headings in many places where they are not needed. David Haslam 11:51, 16 September 2008 (MDT)

Wikipedia isn't our style guide. I, and I would guess many other contributors to the wiki, use standard English-language title casing for section headings. --Osk 14:06, 16 September 2008 (MDT)

Improving the Development Pane

The ideal Frontend wishlist item should be moved to become a section on a more general new page Development Roadmap. IMHO, it is too verbose to be here on the main page. Please comment. David Haslam 19:07, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks to Osk for starting to follow this up. David Haslam 21:47, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

unlisted Frontends

KIO_Sword is a URL handler for Sword project modules that makes installed modules browsable in Konqueror. This means it's Mac/Linux compatible. It's so small and functional. I'm putting it into talk instead of the main page because I don't know what the criteria for listing is. (and since I don't own it...)

Mikey, please sign talk page edits using four tilde, which get converted automatically. David Haslam 17:27, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
For anyone unfamiliar with it, here is a Wikipedia stub about the Konqueror browser. David Haslam 17:30, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Using Talk pages to discuss how to improve pages

If you have ideas or suggestions on how to improve pages on this wiki, please discuss these in the Talk page for the relevant page. Always add new Talk page headings in chronological order. Keep ongoing discussion threads indented using colons. Always sign edits to talk pages using four tilde, which gets automatically converted to your username signature with a time-stamp. Citation extensions for Mediawiki software

We seem to lack the extended features required to support citations and references. See [1]. David Haslam 11:15, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Jargon?

CrossWire uses a lot of jargon that may be familiar to computer programmers and the like, but which easily mystifies the typical Bible student visiting this site for the first time. Even the word Frontend is an example of such jargon. What can we do to make things easier for visitors? David Haslam 10:54, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Most of my edits today were to help the uninitiated understand what v11n means. David Haslam 19:16, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Diatheke

Why is diatheke categorized under "No longer being actively developed" ? David Haslam 17:16, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

Diatheke gets occasional bugfixes for either genuine bugs or incompatibilities with the current library version, but I haven't put any amount of serious work into it since 2001. It doesn't even support GenBooks (which, I assume, were added post-2001). I (or maybe even someone else) might pick up development and add more features some day, but until then I wouldn't consider it under active development. --Osk 21:14, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Front-ends

Please restrict the listing of front-ends on the Main Page to those which are at least at beta test status. It is better to list new front-end development projects in the Current Projects page. David Haslam 19:24, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Flashcards

A search of the wiki for flashcard gives no hits. Please would someone create a new page about these. This topic was prompted by the question from Wes Widner in the SWORD Dev mailing list. David Haslam 15:37, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Front-ends no longer actively being developed

I decided to move this subsection's contents to a new wiki page, to reduce clutter on the main-page. David Haslam 12:17, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

xulsword & phpsword

xulsword was originally developed as Windows based front-end, but more recently has also been adapted as a Firefox extension.

phpsword is part of the xulsword project, but is a server based front-end. For a demonstration, please visit IBT Bible Browser.

MiniBible

Just came across MiniBible app for the Harmattan (Maemo 6/MeeGo) based Nokia mobile phone N9, developed by George Ruinelli. It mentions SWORD modules, so I guess it's a new front-end that had previously escaped our attention. David Haslam 09:48, 4 November 2012 (MST)

The SWORD Project for Windows

Absent a statement from Troy regarding the discontinued development of The SWORD Project for Windows, no, you don't get to deprecate it by fiat, David. --Osk 01:56, 5 December 2013 (MST)

I had half-expected this response, Chris (so I don't blame you for reverting). By all means raise this with Troy, or through CW-Private. Troy had already explained to me several months ago that it would be a dauntingly difficult task to update BibleCS to become compatible with the latest release of SWORD. As no-one has done any work towards this goal since 2008, it was not so much a personal 'fiat', but based on the de facto observations that any of us could make. We all know that this early front-end was once our flagship product for Windows users, yet the fact that it's five and half years out of date must make visitors to our main public website wonder what on earth we are doing. As a very minimum, my edits yesterday have prompted a response. This in itself was something I positively intended, even though it might seem a rum way of going about things. David Haslam 03:02, 5 December 2013 (MST)
It's now seven years since the last release. Absent any further objections since December 2013, it still seems most inappropriate to retain The SWORD Project for Windows on our main page. It ought to be moved to Frontends:No longer being actively developed. David Haslam 13:09, 12 August 2015 (MDT)
